Making Friends at Your New Job
Posted on 02/09 by Erin Helms
The start of a new job can be nerve-wracking. There are numerous concerns, and you might wonder if you will find any friends. Most problems take care of themselves. However, making new friends as an adult is a tricky process. Guess what? You can meet new friends who might become lifelong friends at your new place of work. Here is how to make new friends at work.
Say Hello
It is simple, but it is effective. Even if you are shy, take the initiative, say hello, and offer a handshake. Introduce yourself because you are the new person. Make attempts to start conversations with people as the day progresses, even if it is to ask for directions. Start small because you do not need to know everyone’s life story on day one.
Ask Questions
Ask questions during breaks or at lunch. Ask coworkers how long they have worked for the company and what they like best about their job. Do they have a favorite movie or book? Can they suggest an excellent nearby restaurant or coffee shop? People want to share recommendations. Remember that you will spend 40 hours a week with this group, so get to know their personalities and quirks from the beginning.
Be Present and Available
Lunch or a break in a designated break room is ideal for small talk. Avoid talking on the phone or checking out social media or emails during this time. Trying to get to know people for the first few days is worth it. So be friendly, curious, and open to conversation. Remember to pay close attention to what your new colleagues say.
Participate
Try participating in company events such as happy hours, volunteer opportunities, or company picnics. Small contributions and efforts to connect with your team go a long way in helping you build camaraderie with coworkers—no need to go overboard. Just make an effort.
Not All at Once
The first day is overwhelming, so do not try to do everything simultaneously! You do not need to become best friends with everyone immediately. Start by learning a few names and then expand on them. Hopefully, you will be here awhile, so there will be time to build up your work friend circle.
Will I Ever Make New Friends at Work?
You might have a realistic fear of never making new friends at work. Yes, work environments make it difficult for people to become friends sometimes. You might not have time to mingle, feel uncomfortable, or your new coworkers just do not fit your idea of friends. Remember the tips above. Make sure you are not pushing people away or trying too hard. Not your fault? Consider a new work environment. LaborMAX has excellent job opportunities now.
