Make the Most of Your Time Between Jobs

A career pause can be scary, and finding ways to fill your free time can be a struggle. If you are in-between jobs, there are many ways you can use this time to further yourself professionally and in your personal life.
Pause and Recenter Yourself
Your situation during your unemployment is unique, as are your needs. If you do have the ability to take time to yourself during your unemployment, take the time. You risk burnout if you rush off aggressively on a job hunt after being laid off. If you rush, you might accept a job that aligns differently with your goals and values. Hang out with friends or family, start a hobby, or go for a nature walk. Being laid off can be traumatizing, so do something that brings you happiness for the first few weeks. When an opening excites you, you will be ready for the interview.
Set Small Goals
Now that you are ready for the job hunt, set small weekly goals to prevent long-term burnout. Daily or weekly goals can help you feel like you are building momentum. After you hit a daily or weekly goal, dedicate time to something that makes you happy. Please do not feel guilty enjoying some me time during this lull in your career.
Network
Never underestimate the power of networking. Avoid networking with close friends on social media and opt for acquaintances and weak connections. These contacts offer bridges to social circles and job opportunities outside of your usual network’s reach. Consider using social networking sites to connect with people in your industry. Remember that getting a referral to a company is the ultimate job search hack.
Remain Active in Your Industry
It is vital to feel like you are moving forward during this time. Try to make an effort to continue learning during your downtime. It will help you feel productive both personally and professionally. Consider an online course, a personal project, or read books related to your industry. Many organizations offer affordable, in-depth online courses on a variety of topics. Volunteer work or freelancing is another option.
Invest Time in Yourself
You are so much more than your occupation, so reflect on what you want your life to look like moving forward during this time away. You can seek new opportunities that will move you closer to the life you want to live. Do you want to work somewhere that respects work-life balance? Regardless of this ideal life, be bold and set boundaries around what you will and will not accept while searching for your next job.
